At Watches and Wonders 2024, Piaget wrote a new chapter in the history of precision watchmaking by unveiling the Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept Tourbillon to mark the Maison’s 150th anniversary. This masterpiece sets a new standard of excellence, becoming the thinnest tourbillon watch ever made, a title previously held by the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Tourbillon.
Without further ado, let’s dive into the details of the new Piaget AUC Tourbillon.
A Masterpiece of Engineering and Innovation
The Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept Tourbillon is not only an aesthetic triumph but also a technological marvel. Equipped with the Calibre 970P-UC movement, this watch boasts a peripheral tourbillon that stands out for its sophistication and complexity.
To create this stunning timepiece just 2.00 mm thick and 41.5 mm in diameter, Piaget started from the legendary AUC movement, the famous ultra-flat Altiplano first presented in 2018. However, it was not simply adding a module; rather, the new movement with Flying Tourbillon was created by disrupting the previous caliber and changing 90% of its components.
The result is an incredible watch that maintains the 2.00 mm thickness of the previous AUC, but adds a Flying Tourbillon visible from both sides of the watch. To give the watch adequate strength and rigidity, the case is made of cobalt is simultaneously performs the function of a plate.
The movement’s manual winding and approximately 40-hour power reserve highlight the balance between watchmaking tradition and contemporary innovation. With a frequency of 4 Hz or 28,800 vibrations per hour, it offers unparalleled precision. The beating heart of this watch is protected by an M64BC cobalt alloy case, treated with blue PVD, measuring only 41.5 mm in diameter and surprisingly only 2 mm thick, including crystal.
Water resistance to 20 meters completes the technical specifications of this outstanding model.
Some History of Piaget’s Altiplano
Piaget’s Altiplano collection, known for its elegant and minimalist design, has a long history of innovations that push the limits of what is possible in watchmaking. Originally launched in the 1960s, the Altiplano made its way into the world of watchmaking thanks to its extreme subtlety, which has always represented an engineering and aesthetic challenge.
Each new model has continued to raise the bar for what can be considered an ultra-thin watch, blending sophisticated technique with timeless design. The Altiplano has become a symbol of Piaget’s constant quest for excellence and innovation, always maintaining a perfect balance between form and function. In 2018, the Altiplano collection was enriched with the first Ultimate Concept, an incredible time-only watch that, at 2.00 mm in diameter, had claimed the throne of the world’s thinnest watch.
Final Thoughts
With this timepiece, Piaget has not only regained the record that was taken from it a few years ago by Bulgari, but also celebrated its 150-year history in the best possible way by presenting an incredible watch that evokes all the best of the tradition of savoir-faire of the La Côte-aux-Fées Maison.
