Seven-time Formula One™ world champion Lewis Hamilton is an icon both on and off the racing track. Noted for his daring fashion choices as much as for his driving prowess, Hamilton has once again collaborated with IWC Schaffhausen to introduce a timepiece. The Portugieser Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph Lewis Hamilton edition is not merely a watch; it’s a narrative about the fusion of horological intricacies and a champion’s input.
The Dial and Case
The watch features a 43.5 mm platinum case that houses dial accentuated with 12 diamonds. The petrol color of both the strap and the dial recalls the typical color of the F1 Petronas Mercedes-Benz Team. n The aesthetic is complemented by rhodium-plated hands and appliques. Platinum, known for its rarity and purity, offers a striking contrast to the dial. As for the diamonds, they bring a subtle luxuriousness without overtaking the watch’s primary features.
A part from this items, what strikes the most is the tourbillon positioned traditionally at 6 o’clock.
Firstly, the watch marks a continuation of a fruitful relationship between Hamilton and IWC, reinforcing the former’s role not merely as a brand ambassador but as a contributing designer. Secondly, this is the first time since 1993’s “Il Destriero Scafusia” that IWC has gold-plated the movement, visible through the see-through sapphire glass back.
The Movement
Inside, the IWC-manufactured 89900 calibre is the core, operating at a frequency of 28,800 vph and boasting a 68-hour power reserve. This automatic movement is backed by Diamond Shell® technology on the pallet lever and escape wheel. While the watch has multiple features such as a flying minute tourbillon and a chronograph function, the standout is its Diamond Shell® technology. While such a diamond coating isn’t a new concept in watchmaking, its application here ensures lower friction and efficient energy flow within the movement.
Functionalities: More Than Just Time-Telling
One of the more striking features is the flying hacking minute tourbillon located at 6 o’clock, a mechanism that offers improved timekeeping accuracy by counteracting gravity’s effects. Its integrated tourbillon stop enables precise time-setting down to the second.
The timepiece also incorporates a retrograde date display and a flyback-function. Hours and minutes are combined into a single totalizer at 12 o’clock, which simplifies time reading. These elements add layers of complexity without compromising usability.
This particular edition is capped at 44 pieces, a tribute to Hamilton’s racing number. Such limitation implies a blend of exclusivity and sentimental value for the watch enthusiasts and Hamilton fans alike.
Concluding Thoughts
As collaborations go, the Portugieser Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph Lewis Hamilton provides an interesting case study in what happens when Swiss craftsmanship meets the audacious spirit of a Formula One™ champion. In conclusion, the only thing that could have been thought different is the big Lewis Hamilton’s logo right on the dial. Maybe there could have been a better place to put it.
