Among the new Rolex entries of 2022 shines the Day-Date in platinum with an ice dial. An incredible jewel that perfectly embodies the elitist spirit of a prestigious but, at the same time, incredibly elegant watch.

Launched in 1956, the Day-Date was the first chronometer, waterproof, automatic wristwatch to feature a modern date window that instantly displays the day in letters and the date within the windows on the dial, in a wide range of languages .

Until now available only in platinum or 18 ct gold, it is the elite watch par excellence, for its prestige but also for its refined discretion.

The President bracelet was created in 1956 on the occasion of the launch of the precious Oyster Perpetual Day ‑ Date: refined and exclusive, this metal bracelet with three rounded elements is still reserved for the Day ‑ Date models and some female Datejust models in precious metal. It is always equipped with the Crownclasp, Rolex’s elegant invisible clasp.

Let’s see the characteristics of this new reference presented by Rolex.

Platinum

With the reference 228236, the platinum model enters the Day-Date catalog. It is one of the densest and heaviest metals in the world, characterized by exceptional physical and chemical properties, such as extraordinary resistance to corrosion. Paradoxically, it is also soft, elastic and highly malleable, which makes its processing and polishing particularly difficult, thus requiring very high skills for its processing. Rolex uses only 950 platinum, an alloy composed of 950 ‰ (per thousand) of platinum, made internally thanks to the meticulous work of the company’s metallurgical technicians.

Fluted bezel

The Day ‑ Date 40 in 950 platinum version is available for the first time with a fluted bezel also made “in the noblest of metals”. This innovation is not only aesthetic, but has required many years of research and development to be able to adapt the guillochage process of the knurling

The fluted bezel is a distinctive feature of Rolex watches, which originally had a very specific function: it was used to screw it to the case, thus helping to ensure the water resistance of the watch. The knurling was, consequently, the exact reproduction of that of the caseback which, for the same reasons, was screwed to the case with special Rolex tools. Over time, the knurling has been transformed into an aesthetic element, a hallmark of Rolex which for this Day-Date 40 is available in platinum.

Platinum, with its extraordinary luster and fascinating whiteness, is a difficult metal to work with, particularly when it comes to finishing. For this reason, Rolex had to invent an innovative and unprecedented manufacturing process so as to be able to create the fluted bezel in 950 platinum. Obtaining perfectly geometrical bezels, with flanks with a sparkling surface, represented a real technical challenge.

The dial

The ice blue dial is the discreet and exclusive feature that distinguishes Rolex watches in platinum and in fact we also find it in the Cosmograph Daytona Reference 116506. It is in fact a very successful combination, which makes the watch elegant, brilliant, but at the same time exquisitely discreet on the wrist.

President bracelet

Naturally, the sumptuous bracelet characteristic of the Day-Date cannot be missing: the President, with three rounded elements. Created in 1956 on the occasion of the launch of the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date, a masterpiece of elegance and comfort, it is made with carefully selected precious materials.

The caliber

The Day ‑ Date 40 features a new generation movement, caliber 3255, entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex to ensure superlative performance. This self-winding mechanical movement, the quintessence of Rolex technology and at the forefront of watchmaking, draws enormous benefits from its fourteen patents in terms of precision, autonomy, resistance to shocks and magnetism, ease of use and reliability.

Our opinion

The Day-Date is not discussed: it is dreamed! This platinum model is truly disarming in its sophisticated beauty. In a period of great bling bling, ostentation and excesses, Rolex seems to emphasize the concept that true luxury is not that screamed but is a subtle glow that not everyone can grasp. Platinum, as precious as it is discreet, can only be recognized by the true connoisseur, enjoying the habit of being mistaken, by less attentive eyes, for a more common material.
