The Piaget Polo 79 marks the return of one of the most fashionable watches of the 80s. A watch that defined an era and that collectors have been demanding for many years. We were in Gstaad, deep into the Swiss German mountains, for the world premiere of this launch and we can’t wait to show you the watch.

The King of the Jet Set is Back

il nuovo Piaget Polo 79

Social media has led us to always see the same things, the same watches, the same stories, nothing new. However, the rediscovery of Piaget’s vintage pieces has finally put an end to that boredom, now there is so much new to discover.

Piaget is one of the most popular watch brands of all time, no other brand could compare to it in the 80s, which is why it is considered the king of the jet set. Yves Piaget was a great visionary who understood the value of relationships. For this reason, he had the brilliant intuition that the watch should not be seen as a mere object to purchase, but as a way to access something very exclusive. And so the Piaget Society was born in Gstaad in those years.

Piaget has a huge and still unknown history to many, so it’s time to discover and transmit it to the new generations. Apart from the historical perspective which is very important, the fascinating aspects of Piaget are endless. The colors are surprising, many pieces never look alike and there’s a lot of innovation from a mechanical point of view. Polo is a watch to stand out.

The curious thing is that, as we told you in our incredible journey inside Piaget manufacture, before the Polo all the watches created did not have a name. A rich and diverse production of watches, without any name to distinguish the collections, the models… Crazy!

Having made these small premises, let’s get straight to the heart of the article.

The New Piaget Polo 79: What Do We Think?

For the production of the new Polo 79, Piaget has made several upgrades compared to the original watch: in size, bracelet, and mechanism.

The new Polo 79 measures 38 mm, compared to the 34 mm of the male quartz version. Being a re-edition, many think that Piaget should have kept the original proportions. At the same time, the market has changed infinitely since those years and although we are lovers of small sizes, 34 millimeters we think can be a limiting measure for today’s clientele.

In our opinion, the Polo must have a certain presence on the wrist, it’s a must. This choice means that the lines of the integrated bracelet, which starts from the clasp, up to the dial, emerge even more. Moreover, it must be said that 38 mm is still a perfectly contained size suitable for almost any wrist.

Another upgrade is in the bracelet. Despite having the same lines and original construction, the re-edition is equipped with a butterfly deployant. The first models had a different closure, much more similar to that of jewelry and much less practical.

Another important upgrade was made in the caliber. The Polo was born in two different forms, square and round, but both with quartz mechanism (the 7P), except for some very rare automatic models. For the Polo 79, Piaget chose the 1200.1P caliber with micro-rotor, which is the modern heir of the 12P, which at the time was the thinnest automatic in the world.

The weight is about 200 grams, compared to the approximate 120 grams of the vintage models. This is obviously due to the increased size we talked about earlier.

From what has been reported, it is not a limited edition but a limited production. The real highlight? Buyers of the new Polo 79 will receive a Piaget bomber jacket inspired by the one worn in the 80s by Ursula Andress along with Yves Piaget.
