Here we go again, TAG Heuer starts the year with a bang, unveiling the new Carrera chronograph. This timepiece, inspired by the iconic DATO layout is a homage to TAG Heuer’s rich legacy. Without further ado, let’s dive deep into the Dato history and the features of this new model presented during the LVMH Watch Week.
The Dato Heritage
The Carrera collection, which debuted in 1963, has evolved notably over the years. The collection was originally conceived without the date function. The latter was introduced in 1966 at 12 o’ clock, marking a significant milestone for the collection. However, two years later – in 1968 – the date moved to 9 o’ clock, marking the first original DATO layout. The Carrera 45 Dato, a masterpiece of its time, quickly gained popularity for its modern aesthetic and readability. The watch featured robust mechanics, including a lever movement with 17 jewels and a waterproof case, offering unparalleled functionality.
Given the iconic one-counter layout, the watch was ironically nicknamed “Cyclops”, solidifying its perception inside the vintage watch collecting world. Usually, only cool and desirable pieces get a nickname in this world. Since the creation of the first DATO 45, TAG Heuer has lived many lives and the model was discontinued in the meanwhile. However, testifying its importance, In 2021 Hodinkee and TAG Heuer came out with a limited edition that was openly inspired precisely by the DATO.
The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph
The new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph merges tradition with modern enhancements. While retaining the vintage DATO layout, it introduces significant technical improvements, such as an ergonomically improved case and a harmoniously curved réhaut. The modernity of the watch is further enhanced by the new vibrant green color that resembles the Northern Lights. Moreover, the dial boasts rhodium-plated indices and hands, complemented by a mono-coloured counter at 3 o’clock.
A fundamental change is the use of the beloved “glass box” crystal sapphire that covers the dial, a technological and aesthetics expedient introduced by TAG Heuer in 2023 that has tremendously improved the overall look of the Carrera Chronograph model. The steel case has a diameter of 39 mm and a water resistance up to 100 m, just like the Carrera’s launched in 2023.
A Glimpse into the Heart of Precision
Turning the watch around, the open case back reveals the in-house TAG Heuer 02 chronograph movement, named TH20-07, with a 80-hour power reserve. The watch also features a high-quality black alligator leather strap with a steel buckle, adding a touch of luxury.
Price and Availability
The new Tag Heuer Carrera Chronograph inspired by the DATO layout is already available at a list price of 6,450 EUR.
Final Thoughts
If you follow us, you already know that we loved the new Carrera Glassbox presented last year, and this time we keep repeating ourselves. The new watch follows a clear path, taking inspiration from the past but translating it in today’s language with today’s technological capabilities. Someone might say that this watch does not have the same allure has the original version and I would answer, true! It does not, it should not, and it won’t.
It would be impossible for a watch born yesterday to have the same charm as a watch that carries a 60-year history. TAG Heuer knows that, so they made a watch with its own modern soul that simultaneously tributes its legacy without trying to copy-paste it.
