The TAG Heuer Carrera was born in 1963 paying homage to the world of racing and the courage of the drivers who took on the legendary Carrera Panamericana. But its history has never been limited to the racetracks: back in 1962, a Heuer chronometer was on John Glenn ‘s wrist during the Friendship 7 orbital mission, marking the beginning of a silent but real connection with space exploration. On the occasion of Geneva Watch Days 2025, TAG Heuer presents the new Carrera Astronomer, which expertly combines these two universes.

Let’s find out about them up close!

The design of the new TAG Heuer Carrera Astronomer

The design of the new Carrera Astronomer retains the minimalism and stylistic codes that have always distinguished the collection. The caseback features an engraving depicting an astronomical observatory, surmounted by the Crown of Victory.

The 39mm case accommodates on the dial, the opening dedicated to the moon disc that offers an extraordinary visual balance. The presence of the applied racing-style Arabic numerals silently whispers that the sporty soul of this timepiece does not cease.

The Carrera Astronomer debuts in three variants: a steel version with a silver dial, designed for those who opt for the “traditional”; a 500-piece limited edition with turquoise accents, which enhances the model’s more whimsical and elegant dimension; and finally, a two-tone steel and 18K 5N rose gold version, also limited to 500 pieces, designed for those seeking a sophisticated timepiece.

The caliber of the new TAG Heuer Carrera Astronomer

Inside is the new Calibre 7, an automatic movement with a 50-hour power reserve designed to combine precision and reliability.

It is made atypical by the integration of the moon phase module, which represents a decisive leap forward in quality: the mechanism does not just show the cycles, but scans them with a precision that reduces the accumulated deviations over time, improving the functional longevity of the display.

Unprecedented is interpretation of the lunar phase. Not a poetic representation, not a mere aesthetic embellishment, but a rigorous reading of the cosmic cycle. The rotating 7-stage disc clearly translates the moon cycle, advancing synchronously every night at 1:00 AM. A technical choice that underscores the maison’s scientific approach: the collector’s wrist is no longer a spectator of a romantic abstraction, but a participant in an astronomical rhythm transposed into reality.

Conclusions

The Carrera Astronomer is not just a stylistic exercise, but a concrete and coherent attempt to reinterpret the complication of moon phases. TAG Heuer’s approach is pragmatic: to transform a function often relegated to the role of ornament into a faithful instrument capable of truly reflecting celestial motions.

In this sense, the Astronomer fits perfectly into the Carrera philosophy: rigor, clarity, functionality. If the collection was born to ensure readability and precision in the extreme conditions of racing, today the concept is extended to the observation of cosmic time.

This new timepiece (or perhaps I should call it a signalune), determines a significant transition for the La Chaux-de-Fonds-based maison. It is a watch that does not disavow its automotive origins, but goes further, taking the collector’s wrist beyond the confines of the heavens.

With a reinterpreted complication, a design faithful to the Carrera language, and three versions designed for different audiences, the Astronomer presents itself as a new chapter in TAG Heuer’s history. It is not just a watch to wear, but an invitation to perceive time no longer just as a measure of speed, but as an echo of an eternal cycle that links the track to the celestial vault.

Curious about the prices?

They range from CHF 4,350 for the basic version, to CHF 4,550 for the turquoise edition and CHF 6,900 for the rose gold variant (excluding tax).
