When discussing icons in the world of watches, the OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch undoubtedly holds a place of honor. This magnificent watch boasts an incredible history that spans nearly 70 years. Today, the collection is enriched with a new edition featuring a white lacquered dial that evokes space exploration and the illustrious heritage of the collection. But what makes this new white dial Speedmaster so special? Let’s find out together.
A Breathtaking Preview
The anticipation for this model began in November 2023, when Daniel Craig, brand ambassador for OMEGA, was spotted wearing the prototype on his wrist during the Planet OMEGA exhibition in New York. Now, the design has finally been unveiled and is ready for sale to the public, promising to become a must-have for Moonwatch aficionados.
The White Dial Speedmaster
The most distinctive feature of this watch is, without a doubt, its rare white dial. In the original version of the Speedmaster, launched in 1957, the goal was to ensure exceptional readability with white hands and indices on a black background. For this reason, if we draw an imaginary line through the history of the collection, we can notice that most of the models produced follow the same color theme.
However, over the course of these 67 long years, the Speedmaster has undoubtedly seen some very important variants by reversing the color palette, highlighting white, such as the Speedmaster “Albino”, the Snoopy, or the Alaska Project. These, in particular, are fundamental to Omega’s history as they laid the groundwork for the Maison’s space race.
It’s clear how this latest Speedmaster from Omega draws inspiration from pieces that are fundamental to the Maison’s history. The new variant reverses the classic color palette but maintains the same principle of readability, enriching everything with black details and newly designed applied indices that create a very pleasing three-dimensional effect. On the dial, the Speedmaster name and the tip of the chronograph hand stand out, both marked by a vivid red that, in addition to echoing the lines on the space suits since Apollo 13, also pays homage to the secret NASA ALASKA I project, for which OMEGA designed a prototype with a white dial for its thermal reflecting properties.
For enthusiasts, the black anodized aluminum bezel with the famous “Dot over Ninety” does not go unnoticed.
The watch features a 42 mm stainless steel case, inside which beats the heart of the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861, an evolution of the epic Calibre 321, a reliable companion for astronauts on the Moon during the first space missions of the ’60s.
The new white dial Speedmaster is available with a vintage-inspired steel bracelet with polished and brushed finishes. However, two additional straps are included: one in black micro-perforated leather with red and white stitching, and another in antibacterial rubber with a pattern that mimics the lunar surface on the underside.
The list price of this new white dial Speedmaster Moonwatch is 9,100 EUR.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, the latest edition of the OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch is not just a watch; it’s a piece of history, technology, and design that can captivate not only watch enthusiasts but anyone fascinated by space exploration and humanity’s ability to overcome its own limits. It is a revisitation of a classic that brings to light and allows us to remember the incredible story of the brand and the importance it has held and continues to hold, not just in our industry, but in the world at large.
