Two years after the presentation of the yellow gold version, in tribute to the model’s 100th anniversary, Cartier has unveiled a new model of the Tank Cintrée in platinum. Distinguished by its iconic rectangular shape, this new watch encapsulates the entire history and successful design of the model from its inception to the present day.

The Cartier Tank Cintrée in Platinum
When we talk about shapes and design in the world of watchmaking, we can only refer, in my opinion, to one and only one maison, namely Cartier. Ever since the introduction of their first wristwatch in 1904, made for Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos Dumont, Cartier has always distinguished itself to this day by making watches with a unique appeal and a totally singular design, just think of the Crash.
Among the various collections presented by the maison, one cannot but dwell on the one that, to date, turns out to be the most famous of all, namely the one named “Tank.” Declined in different versions and under different names, one of my favorite models of the house was introduced in 1921, namely the Tank Cintrée. Just introduced, this watch with its iconic rectangular but curved shape, able to follow the shape of the wrist making it one with the wearer, was initially made in yellow gold.
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of this version, a new yellow gold version of the model was unveiled in 2021 that faithfully took inspiration from its predecessor. Today Cartier, however, to pay tribute to the first platinum version presented in 1923, introduces a new version of the Tank Cintrée in platinum.
This contoured and ultra-thin watch is thus back again on the modern watchmaking scene already making a lot of (positive) talk about itself. Starting with the dial with a color similar to that of an eggshell, we can see a strong inspiration from the old dials of the 1920s model. Above this we can see Roman numerals, black printed hour markers, and classic blued steel apple-shaped hands.
On the right side of the platinum case, underscoring its craftsmanship with this noble metal, is placed the iconic beaded crown with ruby cabochon as with all platinum models from the maison. Inside the 46.30 mm long and 23 mm wide iconic shaped case of this splendid watch we find the caliber 9780 MC supplied by Jaeger-LeCoultre.
This is a hand-wound caliber that, thanks to being ultra-thin, ensures that the entire watch is only 6.03 mm thick. Completing the design of the watch is a semi-matt black alligator strap fitted with a platinum pin buckle.
Price and availability
The new Cartier Tank Cintrée in platinum, limited to only 150 pieces, will be sold at a list price of EUR 34,700.
Final thoughts
With this new model Cartier once again confirms its savoir-faire in the field of uniquely and iconically designed watches. In an industry dominated by the search for the most high-performance or complicated caliber, Cartier continues to focus everything on design, making each of its new creations a true work of art.
In fact, I find that this new Tank Cintrée in platinum is first of all a watch to be admired and, only later, to be worn and then lost once again in admiring its beauty. As much as it may appear as a “simple” watch, we are in fact faced with a creation that holds within it so much history and refinement in terms of form and design.
Whether or not you are madly in love with the maison, as in my case, I think you will definitely appreciate this new creation especially for the fact that once you have it on your wrist, I guarantee it will be quite difficult to part with it.
