In front of the hushed elegance of Lake Geneva, the world of haute horology holds its breath. One of the most incandescent weeks of the year is about to begin as four major houses-Phillips, Christie’s, Sotheby’s , and Antiquorum-open their doors to masterpieces that rarely emerge from the vaults of the world’s most influential collectors.

Nowhere else does watchmaking find a more electric stage: here, in halls illuminated by discreet spotlights and feverish gazes, not only objects are celebrated, but stories, technical miracles, characters of an era. This year, anticipation exceeds all measure. The catalogs are a succession of legendary names, of references that make the pulse and the wallet shake. Without getting lost in further ado, let’s take a quick look at the “pieces” that will set the stages of the world’s leading auction houses ablaze.

Phillips’ auction

We can undoubtedly say that the Phillips selection seems built to challenge even the most disciplined collectors. Each lot vibrates with rarity and charisma. Are you ready?

Patek Philippe Ref. 1518

Geneva 2025: 1518 Pateks up for auction at Phillips

It is not a watch: it is a monument. It is the mother of all Patek sports complications, the first perpetual calendar chronograph ever mass-produced.. Every appearance at auction is a historic event. Its estimate? Around CHF 8,000,000.

Rolex Daytona – a trilogy of myths

  • Ref. 6241 – one of the most charismatic faces of pre-Paul Newman Daytona.
  • Ref. 16520 “Prototype Dial” – an impossible specimen, a Behind the Scenes of the Zenith era, born when Rolex was perfecting its prototypes.
  • Ref. 6263 “Oyster Sotto” – it is estimated that there are just under 30 examples of this “Paul Newman” in the world. The nickname “Oyster Sotto,” which in Italian really means “Oyster Under,” reveals the main feature of this dial: it bears the inscription “Rolex Cosmograph Oyster” instead of the more common “Rolex Oyster Cosmograph” usually found on Daytona dials (in manual models with Oyster cases).
This is because the “Oyster Sotto” dials were mounted on the very first examples of the Reference 6263, which introduced waterproof screw-down pushers for the first time.

J. Player & Sons “Hyper Complication”

An almost cinematic name for one of the most extreme creations in independent watchmaking: a mechanical sculpture that defies time and logic. Its estimates approach CHF 1,000,000.

Patek Philippe Ref. 5976/1G Nautilus 40th Anniversary

Oversized, bold, celebratory-a piece born to divide, but deeply desired by collectors.

Christie’s auction

The London-based fashion house is no different and unleashes a Rolex-dominated collection with an almost theatrical intensity.

Rolex Sea-Dweller “COMEX” Ref. 1665

Each COMEX timepiece is a chapter of industrial history. These watches were not created for luxury, but to challenge the abyss: for this very reason, they are sacred today.

Rolex GMT-Master ‘SARU’ Ref. 16758SARU

One of the most eccentric and desired jewels: sapphires (SA), rubies (RU), a creative phase of Rolex that experimented fearlessly. Luxury and boldness in perfect balance.

Rolex “Jean-Claude Killy” – Ref. 6236 & Ref. 6036

Rolex “universals”: the most complex full calendar chronographs ever made by the maison. To own one is to hold an entire watchmaking philosophy.

Rolex Daytona “Sodalite” Ref. 16589SACI

Sodalite is a living, imperfect, dramatic stone. Seeing it on a Daytona is like observing a work of contemporary sculpture on the wrist.

Rolex Daytona “The Doctor” Ref. 6239

The Pulsometric Daytona: the watch of men who measured life-literally-with a chronograph on their wrist.

Rolex Chronograph “Verga” Ref. 3525

A rare reference sold by renowned Milanese retailer Verga: a piece that brings with it Italian glamour and Swiss precision.

Patek Philippe Two-Tone Ref. 530

One of the most elegant chronographs in history. A two-tone combination that today verges on aesthetic perfection.

Richard Mille RM018 & RM053 (unique examples)

Two sacred monsters of contemporary technique.

  • RM018 “Hommage à Boucheron “-a symphony of extraordinary materials and architecture.
  • RM053 Pablo MacDonough-a warrior‘s watch designed to survive a lethal sport like polo.

The Antiquorum Auction

The oldest specialized auction house takes the narrative back to the roots of the collection.

Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 1675-8 – Gift to His Majesty Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum

A watch that goes beyond mechanics: it is diplomacy, political history, power. Gifted by legendary Rolex CEO André-Jean Heiniger, it embodies a crucial chapter in relations between the Geneva-based maison and the Middle East.

Patek Philippe Ref. 3450 in yellow gold

One of the most beautiful perpetual calendars ever produced, with moon phase display and day jump. Its aesthetic balance is so pure that many consider it the pinnacle of 1980s Patek design.

Conclusions

There is everything in these three auctions: the poetry of Lange, the divinity of Patek, the mythological power of Rolex, the futuristic audacity of Richard Mille.
Each piece is a story that comes back to light, a mechanical gesture that defies time, a fragment of the lives of the world’s greatest collectors. In the coming days, Geneva will not only be a city: it will be the beating heart of world watchmaking. Which masterpiece would you dream of buying?
