Greubel Forsey, on the occasion of the Geneva Watch Days 2022, has decided to amaze the world of watchmaking once again with the presentation of the new Greubel Forsey GMT Balancier Convexe.
Equipped with a new GMT caliber, this movement replaces all previous GMT models and presents for the first time the characteristic inclined balance wheel, as if in orbit around the Earth.
The aesthetic architecture that distinguishes this masterpiece of fine watchmaking is perfectly blended with the technical mastery that confirms the contemporary approach of Greubel Forsey.
In this clock, the geocentrism conceived by Aristotle and Copernicus, which sees the Earth at the center of the universe, gives way to a new Geocentrism conceived by Greubel Forsey: the Earth at the center of the new GMT Balancier Convexe.
Geocentrism according to Greubel Forsey
The Earth on the dial of this new masterpiece by Greubel Forsey, with its continents, seas and oceans, is made with a perfect titanium sphere and represents one of the most emblematic creations of the Atelier.
At the heart of the GMT, GMT Earth, GMT Quadruple Tourbillon and GMT Sport models, it represents one of Greubel Forsey’s greatest successes to date.
Positioned inside an amphitheater construction, this sphere, in the new GMT Balancier Convexe, rotates 24 hours a day, just like the Earth.
The dial and functions of the new GMT Balancier Convexe
As the protagonist, in all its majesty, we find the Earth positioned in the heart of an amphitheater construction bordered by three rings that indicate the time: hours and minutes, local and universal time.
The 24 time zones available to this new Greubel Forsey offer universal time display on a black background at night and on a white background during the day.
On the back of the watch, it is possible to observe the disc of the 24 time zones, which allows you to view the UTC time of the 24 reference cities.
For this new model, the Atelier has decided to make a change to the disc: the exact time in Paris has been replaced by the city of La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, where Greubel Forsey has settled since his earliest days. of activity.
As for the local time, this is indicated on the two outer rings of the amphitheater where the Earth is located: the gray satin ring shows the hours, the thin black one the minutes.
The time is read by means of the red triangular-tipped hands, coated with a luminescent substance.
To indicate the GMT time, these hands move on two further rings on which the keywords dear to the Atelier are engraved.
At 10 o’clock there is an off-center dial which indicates a second time zone by means of a blue gold hand.
In the lower part of the dial, the balance wheel of the movement stands out, inclined at 30 °, which seems to float in the void supported by the black steel balance wheel with a polished finish, placed on polished steel pillars.
On the right side, we can see a counter with a blue gold hand that serves to indicate the small seconds.
The case of the new GMT Balancier Convexe
The emblematic convex case signed by Greubel Forsey is made of titanium, with a case diameter of 43.5mm (46.5mm with the bezel) and adapts perfectly to the curve of the wrist.
L’altezza è invece di 13,75 mm; 17,40 mm con il vetro zaffiro al sopra di essa.
The sapphire crystal and the satin-finished bezel follow the same curved geometry of the case, extended to the titanium bracelet or, alternatively, to the textured rubber strap. As for the water resistance of the watch, this is guaranteed up to 10 atm (100 meters).
The caliber of the new GMT Balancier Convexe
Greubel Forsey dedicates a new caliber to the globe that worthily replaces its predecessors, adding a noteworthy complication: world hours.
It is a GMT movement created through the use of 423 components and with an oscillation of 21,600 vibrations / hour. As for the power reserve, this is guaranteed for 72 hours.
Price and availability
Greubel Forsey will only make 66 GMT Balancier Convexe: 22 units per year between 2022 and 2024.
Available with a titanium bracelet or textured rubber strap, the list price is around € 447,000 for the first version and around € 402,000 for the second version.
