Barcelona, with its lively streets and spectacular beaches, set the perfect backdrop for a unique unveiling. Ahead of the 2024 America’s Cup, OMEGA launched the new Seamaster Planet Ocean Deep Black Emirates Team New Zealand Edition in Vilanova during a preliminary regatta, and we were fortunate enough to be present for the occasion.
I know, we are Italian and it still hurts that ETNZ defeated Luna Rossa in the last America’s Cup but we were nonetheless excited to take part to the event and see the watch firsthand.
A Nod to New Zealand
The special Seamaster Planet Ocean Deep Black is infused with a touch of New Zealand, drawing inspiration from the reigning champions’ logo, the Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ). As Auckland’s team gears up to defend the prestigious sports trophy next year in Barcelona, OMEGA decided to celebrate their competitive spirit with this collectible timepiece.
CEO Insights OMEGA’s CEO, Raynald Aeschlimann, shared his insights on the new watch and the team behind its inspiration: “Time flies, and it’s now time to show our true colors. This watch is as captivating as it is functional, paying the right tribute to the talented crew and the country they represent.”
Distinctive Features
The 45.5 mm Seamaster Planet Ocean showcases a blend of deep black and ETNZ’s turquoise logo. The black ceramic of its case and bezel, combined with the SuperLumiNova emitting a green glow, ensures it stands out both day and night.
Turquoise details are evident on the countdown indicator, the hand, and other dial elements, mirroring ETNZ’s logo. The symbol of the America’s Cup, serving as the counterbalance to the central second’s hand, underscores the watch’s deep connection to the sailing world.
At 3 o’ clock, the watch presents a countdown indicator with the “START” to recall the pre-race protocols. Both the hand and the ring of this counter draws inspiration to the turquoise blue of the ETNZ logo, which is used on the pushers and on the helium escape valve at 10 o’ clock.
The case ensures water resistance to 600 m. If you are not certain about how this works I recommend you read our guide dedicated to water resistance in watches.
On the caseback, provided with NAIAD Lock System, we find the logo of the ETNZ with a turquoise fern and white text for “Emirates Team New Zealand”.
Craftsmanship Inside Out
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the watch is powered by the Master Chronometer 9900 caliber, testifying to OMEGA’s horological expertise. And it’s not just the watch that impresses. It comes fitted with a structured rubber strap in black and turquoise. Yet, OMEGA has also included additional strap options to suit various occasions.
A Long-standing Partnership
OMEGA has been backing the Emirates Team New Zealand since 1995, cementing a longstanding partnership. With the 37th edition of the America’s Cup, OMEGA will once again serve as the Official Timekeeper, bringing precision and passion to the world of racing.
Final thoughts
As the world’s top sailors prepare to compete for glory in the 2024 America’s Cup, OMEGA commemorates with a watch that embodies excellence in both design and functionality. And with beautiful Barcelona as the backdrop for its launch, this event is set to be one of the highlights of next year.
