The debut of the Piaget Polo 79 Two-Tone marks a key moment in the maison’s strategy. Following the yellow gold version of 2024 and the white gold version of 2025, this new two-tone declination presents itself as a conscious synthesis, capable of fully restoring the Polo’s original philosophy and, at the same time, bringing it up to date. The collection is now complete, and this latest arrival reaffirms the Polo as a cultural object.

Piaget’s roots

Founded in 1874 in La Côte-aux-Fées, Piaget built its authority throughout the 20th century around two inseparable pillars: technical excellence and aesthetic refinement. The 9P calibers of 1957 and 12P of 1960 marked a turning point for Swiss watchmaking, offering hitherto unthinkable thicknesses and opening up new formal possibilities. Subtlety thus becomes a creative tool, a key to rethinking the watch.

In the 1960s and 1970s this technical dimension became intertwined with an increasingly strong presence in international culture. Under the leadership of Yves Piaget, the maison entered into a direct relationship with the world of art and entertainment. Andy Warhol collects Piagets and considers them to be objects of art, Salvador Dalí commissions customized examples, while figures such as Elizabeth Taylor, Jacqueline Kennedy, and Brooke Shields help consolidate the image of the Piaget watch as a sign of cultured taste and cultural belonging. The brand thus becomes one of the few examples of watchmaking capable of a stable dialogue with art and visual culture.

1979: the birth of Polo as an icon

It is in this context that in 1979 the Piaget Polo, the first watch of the maison to have its own name, was born. The choice is not accidental: polo as a sport represents a precise social universe of informal elegance and sophistication. The design of the Polo breaks with the traditional codes of the time. The case and bracelet form a single fluid architecture, the watch is made mostly of solid gold, and the surface is marked by the rhythm of polished and satin-finished gadroons, which become the aesthetic signature of the model.

In the 1980s, it quickly became a recognizable icon, precisely because it managed to place itself in a rare space between watch and jewelry, between technique and design culture. More than forty years later, the strength of its visual language remains surprisingly relevant today.

The return of Pole 79

The relaunch of the Piaget Polo 79 in 2024 is distinguished from many reissue operations by the clarity of its approach. Restrained proportions, slim case, integrated bracelet, visual continuity between surfaces and structure: each element refers directly to the 1979 original, yet reinterpreted with contemporary build quality.

The modernity of the Polo 79 stems precisely from this conceptual fidelity. The design avoids artificial updates and finds its strength in the precision of the design, the purity of the lines, and the quality of the manufacture. It is a choice that positions Piaget distinctly within the panorama of luxury sports watches.

With the Polo 79 Two-Tone, Piaget brings the design to a new maturity. The combined use of white gold and yellow gold becomesa structural element of the design. The case and main surfaces of the bracelet are made of brushed white gold, while polished gadroons emerge in yellow gold, creating a calibrated and sophisticated contrast.

The gold dial also echoes this visual grammar, while yellow gold dauphine hands complete the ensemble. The effect is decidedly architectural: light flows along the surfaces enhancing the proportions and making the precision of the design evident. The result is a watch that communicates complexity without ostentation, intended for an audience sensitive to contemporary watchmaking design.

The 1200P1 caliber

Inside the Polo 79 Two-Tone is the Piaget manufacture caliber 1200P1, an ultra-thin automatic movement with micro-rotor. With a thickness of only 2.35 millimeters and a power reserve of about 44 hours, it represents one of the most consistent expressions of Piaget’s technical tradition.

The value of this movement lies primarily in its function within the overall design. The subtlety of the caliber allows the elegant proportions of the case to be preserved and contributes directly to the wrist experience of comfort and lightness. Piaget’s mechanics thus remain true to their historical vocation: to support design through technology.

Polo 79 triptych and its significance

With the arrival of the Two-Tone, Piaget completes a true conceptual triptych. The yellow gold version represents the most direct continuity with the spirit of 1979. The white gold interpretation offers a more contemporary reading, playing on surfaces and reflections with greater discretion. The Two-Tone synthesizes both souls, becoming the most sophisticated declination.

The economic positioning also follows this progression. The solid gold versions are indicatively placed between 85,000 and 88,000 euros, while the price of the Piaget Polo 79 Two-Tone exceeds the 90,000 euro mark, reflecting the executive complexity and symbolic role of this model within the collection.

The Piaget Polo 79 Two-Tone confirms the direction taken by the maison: to preside over an autonomous space in the world of luxury watchmaking, far from the dynamics of functional sports watches and close instead to the culture of project, design and material. In this context, luxury is measured through coherence and depth, while modernity emerges from the solidity of a language built over time.

The new Pole does not simply represent a catalog novelty, but the full maturity of an idea begun in 1979 and now more relevant than ever: the watch as an object of contemporary culture, capable of speaking through form, history and substance.
