In this edition of Watches & Wonders, Rolex has just unveiled one of the most talked-about and fascinating innovations of the year. New versions of the house’s most iconic models are introduced, and for the first time the Land-Dweller, the brand’s first high-frequency watch, is unveiled to the world. What appeared to be the result of a few renders turned out to be a groundbreaking, probably one of the most important in recent years from the Geneva-based brand.

Rolex’s new Land-Dweller, is a hybrid of innovation and tradition. The case and bracelet certainly do not go unnoticed by the most experienced, evoking the design of the Rolex Oysterquartz of the late 1970s, in which the integrated bracelet created a harmonious geometry with the case. This new timepiece is proposed as a first in the Rolex panorama, as it represents a watch outside the box. No fewer than thirty-two patents and patent applications were filed for its creation, symbolizing Rolex’s continued commitment to pushing its limits.

Available in two sizes of 36mm and 40mm diameter, this watch comes in three different versions: White Rolesor, 18ct Everose gold with a deep white dial, and in 950 platinum with an ice blue dial.

The design of this Land-Dweller presents quite a few new features, with a Flat Jubilee bracelet featuring alternating polished and satin finishes that, in harmony with the slender Oyster case, creates a linear elegance. On the dial we find great changes. Made as a reminder of nature in this honeycomb texture, we notice hands designed specifically for this model and a sloping rheahut , so as to ensure maximum visibility. The indexes are also a novelty, taking up the characteristic numbers 6 and 9 as on the Explorer model.

The biggest innovation brought this year, resides inside this watch thanks to the brand new in-house automatic caliber 7135, one of the thinnest ever made by the house. This new movement reminds us why Rolex is one of the best brands in the world. In this latest caliber from the maison, we find all the know-how of the Coronata house, with no less than sixteen patent applications, in which the most significant ones concern the new Dynapulse escapement, a technological marvel.

The traditional Swiss anchor escapement is pushed aside to make way for a sequential distribution escapement that changes everything. Power is transmitted by rotation, thanks to two distribution wheels connected to an impulse bascule that powers the oscillations of the Syloxi balance.

The balance wheel itself has also been redesigned. Its axis was made of ceramic for the first time, a first for Rolex, greatly reducing friction and ensuring greater precision, the result of strong research and development. This balance wheel, oscillates at the extraordinary frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour, greatly increasing the precision of the watch by measuring time to the tenth of a second, a first for Rolex.

Rolex also joins the ranks of major brands to use innovative materials such as ceramic, in this case by including a green dial on the new GMT-Master II with a white gold case and bracelet. The left-handed model, already introduced in 2022 and featuring a winding crown at nine o’clock and green and black bezel, is now updated with this new model in which the ceramic dial is also colored the same green. In fact, the same Cerachrom used for the outer bezel, which is characterized by a strong luster and resistance to fading, patented by Rolex in 2005. The list price of this watch is EUR 48,850.

We also find updates for the 18k Everose gold model, which features an iron rock dial, employed here for the first time by Rolex. This rock features a very unique texture. Composed of three minerals such as tiger’s eye, red jasper, and hematite, this material gives truly unique reflections with hues that fade from orange to red, with darker strokes. Thanks to Rolex’s strong work in curating the cut of this stone, its hues perfectly match the pink of the case and the two-tone of the bezel. This variant of the GMT-Master II has a list value of EUR 51,700.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual: a touch of fantasy

Inside is the caliber 4131, which debuted in 2023 with huge improvements over its predecessor 4130 in terms of reliability and precision. This model has a list price of EUR 38,050.
