At the end of the 1990s, CHANEL dialogued with the world of watchmaking, transferring to the “time dimension” the same principles that had defined the Maison in fashion: simplicity and elegance, innovation and pioneering use of materials, boldness and timelessness.

Today we are witnessing the return of the J12 , and as Marianne Etchebarne, Global Director of Image and Communication for CHANEL Watches and Fine Jewelry, points out, the new campaign “marks a new chapter, both in terms of storytelling and technical-creative experimentation.” A statement that gives us the measure of how this project constitutes a conscious return to what made the timepiece unique and iconic.
Origins: the concept of sportiness according to CHANEL
The J12 was born in 2000 under the creative direction of Jacques Helleu, in a context where the luxury sports watch was already strongly codified. Marked bezels, muscular constructions and deep-rooted technical references. However, Helleu looks elsewhere, to the nautical world and in particular to the J-Class boats, objects in which every line exists for a reason and where beauty is also inextricably linked to function.
The reference to sailing is not only formal. In the J12, sportiness is expressed through continuous lines, wise proportions, and compact construction. The round case, bezel with engraved markers, and integrated bracelet create an instantly “readable” object that, once worn, already looks familiar (as if it had always existed).
The choice of ceramic
The real “revolution” of the J12 lies in ceramic. In 2000 it was a material foreign to haute horlogerie, and CHANEL decided to invest in it in a systemic way, developing in-house a production process capable of guaranteeing precision, durability and consistent quality.
The J12’s ceramic is fired at more than 1,300 degrees in the La Chaux-de-Fonds factory. The result is a material seven times stronger than steel, virtually immune to scratches, and stable in color and time. These technical characteristics are complemented by a central sensory dimension provided by an extremely smooth surface and a lightness that directly affects the experience of daily use.
Over the years, the original color is joined by white and later by blue. Each color variation is the result of complex and proprietary pigmentation processes.
Ceramic thus becomes a true identity element of CHANEL watchmaking.
A cross-cutting icon
The J12 quickly established itself as a watch suitable for different audiences. Initially designed as a sports timepiece with no gender distinction, it’s adopted just as naturally by men and women. The balanced proportions, absence of superfluous decoration and color neutrality contribute to this versatility.
Rather than responding to a specific category, the J12 appeals to those who recognize value in formal synthesis and functionality. A characteristic that has fostered its popularity and longevity, making it one of the most recognizable models on the contemporary scene.
With time, attention is also focused on the technical component. The introduction of Caliber 12.1, developed by Kenissi and COSC chronometer-certified, marks a stage of maturity for the collection. The automatic movement offers a 70-hour power reserve and is designed to ensure high standards of precision and reliability.
The finish of the caliber, visible through the sapphire crystal case back, echoes recognizable aesthetic codes of CHANEL watchmaking, with an oscillating weight decorated with the Maison’s distinctive circular motif. The result is a balance between technical performance and attention to detail.
The new campaign and a return to origins
The new J12 campaign stems from a precise reflection on how to tell the story of an established icon today. The goal is to bring attention back to the essence of the project, to the codes that have defined its identity since its debut.

The sea returns to the center of the narrative as the original matrix of the watch. The nautical inspiration, present from the beginning, is reinterpreted through images in which time is marked by the strength of movements and gestures. The recent partnership as Title Partner and Official Timekeeper of the Boat Race reinforces this direction, recalling values dear to both entities such as: precision, boldness and synergy of purpose.

According to Etchebarne, “the aquatic world has always been at the heart of the J12 story, and going back to these origins has special significance at this time.” Indeed, the campaign moves along a line of continuity, integrating recent developments such as the introduction of the J12 BLEUE and the link to rowing competition within a coherent and structured narrative.

The images build a visual rhythm , devoid of excess, into which J12 fits naturally.

The choice of Gisèle Bündchen as the face of the campaign fits into this context, embodying that balance between strength and delicacy that has characterized J12 since its inception.
Our thoughts
More than twenty-five years after its debut, the J12 continues to move along a clear and recognizable line. The new campaign represents, in Etchebarne’s words, “a conscious decision to renew the narrative, reaffirming the central role of the J12 in CHANEL’s watchmaking universe.”
Lines, materials, mechanics and communication all converge in unison and time is presented as a concrete, lived, shared experience. An approach that restores depth to the product and reinforces the incontrovertible link between watch and man.
