In watchmaking, true excellence often manifests itself discreetly. In 2024, Grand Seiko unveiled Caliber 9SA4, its first high-frequency hand-wound mechanical movement in more than fifty years, accompanied by the Birch Bark SLGW003 model, winner of the “Best of the Best” award at the Red Dot Design Awards in the Product Design category, and its gold version SLGW002.

These timepieces embody the refined synthesis of tradition and innovation, expressing an understated and refined aesthetic that reflects the values of the manufacture.

A year later, the Japanese Maison presents the Moonlit Birch SLGW007, a watch that celebrates mechanical precision and pays homage to the evocative night landscape of Iwate’s moonlit birch trees, elegantly reinterpreting the white bark motif dear to Grand Seiko.
Design between research and balance
The Moonlit Birch belongs to the Evolution 9 collection, the most mature synthesis of Grand Seiko’s aesthetic language. Compared to previous models, the design retains the brand’s distinctive geometry, characterized by sharp edges and an harmonious alternation of Zaratsu-polished surfaces and vertical satin-finishing.

The case measures 38.6 mm in diameter (45 mm from lug to lug) and is less than 10 mm thick, a major technical achievement: until a few years ago, a Hi-Beat watch this thin would have been unthinkable. The transition from titanium to steel accentuates the feeling of solidity and gives it more presence on the wrist, while still maintaining a well-balanced overall weight.
The “box-shaped” sapphire crystal enhances the readability of the dial, while the thin bezel widens the visual aperture, giving the watch a bright, clean look that is perfectly in line with Grand Seiko‘s philosophy.
The soul of the dial
The white birch motif is recurring and an integral part of Grand Seiko’s DNA. The SLGW007 offers a new chromatic and symbolic interpretation of it. The navy blue dial features a rich finish of irregular reliefs, inspired by the bark of birch trees on the Hiraniwa Plateau, poetically evoking the moonlight that spreads through the trees.

Unlike the previous white or silver versions, here the color blue takes on a more intimate meaning. representing the tranquility of the night and the silence of nature surrounding the Shizukuishi headquarters, where each Grand Seiko mechanical watch comes to life.
The polished steel hour markers and spheres reflect even the subtlest variations in light, respecting the principles of theEvolution 9 Style: legibility, balance, and three-dimensionality. The absence of a date window enhances the symmetry and purity of the dial, while the fine chapter ring contributes additional visual rigor.
The 9SA4 movement: 5 Hz of pure Japanese engineering
Caliber 9SA4 represents one of the most advanced hand-wound movements ever made by Grand Seiko. It was developed in-house from the 9SA5 automatic movement, from which it inherits the basic structure and many innovative technical solutions, but adopts a new, slimmer architecture optimized for manual winding.
The frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour (5 Hz) ensures smooth movement of the seconds hand and high precision, with a claimed tolerance of -3/+5 seconds per day. The two barrels arranged in parallel ensure a power reserve of 80 hours, an outstanding achievement for a high-frequency movement.

The Dual Impulse Escapement system, the result of years of research, transmits energy to the balance wheel by both direct thrust and lever, improving efficiency and reducing wear. The free-sprung balance wheel is fixed under a transverse bridge that increases its stability, a solution derived from chronometer watchmaking.

The aesthetics of the movement also reflect Grand Seiko’s typical care: fine-line decoration, polished bevels, blued screws, and a barrel ratchet in the shape of the cutrettola, the bird symbolic of Iwate prefecture. The power reserve indicator is placed on the case back to keep the dial clean.
Conclusions
The Moonlit Birch SLGW007 abandons the traditional black alligator strap in favor of a new blue calfskin strap with a natural texture that is more versatile and suitable for everyday wear. This choice gives the watch a less formal but no less sophisticated character, consistent with the essential design of the case. The finely polished pin buckle completes the ensemble discreetly.

With the Moonlit Birch SLGW007, Grand Seiko once again confirms how tradition and innovation can coexist without compromise. It is a watch that focuses not on dramatic effect, but on the depth of detail, the dialogue between light and matter, and an aesthetic that speaks of time lived and contemplated, rather than simply measured.

Available from October 2025 at Grand Seiko boutiques and selected retailers, the SLGW007 is part of the permanent collection and is offered at a price of €10,200, compared to €12,000 for the previous titanium version.
