Dear friends of IWS, after a 2022 full of watchmaking novelties that is almost coming to an end, Moser has decided to close the year with one of the most innovative creations of recent times. Following a multiplicity of sectors that are trying to delve inside the new technologies of the 3.0 world, haute horlogerie certainly could not miss the roll call.

And that is exactly how, first of all Bulgari, surprised us this year with that much-discussed QR code placed above its Octo Finissimo Ultra that can connect us with something beyond the watch itself.

Same thing, very different way, Moser decided to present a new model in the Endeavour collection that can throw the watch owner into a parallel world.

We therefore welcome the new Moser Endeavour Centre Seconds Genesis, a concept watch that can combine in perfect harmony, physical and virtual dimensions.

Technology and tradition

01100111 01100101 01110 01100101 01110011 01101001 01110011, this is the name of the new Endeavour Centre Seconds Genesis in binary code.

And it is precisely this code that was shared by Moser on his Instagram profile via a post, leaving it to our imagination what it could have been about.

At first glance, thinking about the binary code potentially linked directly to a watch and, more importantly, thinking about the irreverent character that has always driven Moser to create watches that are out of the ordinary, I thought it might be a smartwatch in a Moser “key.”

Reading the post’s comments, I must say that the smart watch option seemed to be the most credited among the Maison’s followers. Thinking more carefully, however, I said to myself, “Surely Moser will never present something that we have already seen.”

Suffice it to say that, following its own unconventional and creative character, the Swiss Maison also made a cheese watch in 2018 and one covered with plants in 2019 (to learn more, I invite you to read our dedicated article).

And it is precisely on the basis of this premise that the smart watch option was debunked on the very day of the presentation. Already from the first seconds of the press conference, organized to launch the new Endeavour Centre Seconds Genesis, we began to realize that we were facing something unprecedented.

Indeed, Moser chose an unprecedented experience for the presentation by organizing the conference within the Metaverse. Spoiler alert, it is in this futuristic world that the lucky owners of the new Moser Genesis will be able to immerse themselves thanks to the watch they will purchase.

With this innovative project, Moser wanted to create what represents a futuristic breakthrough in the world of watchmaking, yet without forgetting the main present element characterizing its timepieces since the 1800s: traditional haute horology.

We could therefore say that we are facing a utopian vision that starts precisely from tradition, given the fact that the new Moser Genesis is nothing more than a “normal” watch with something more: the possibility to access a parallel world thanks to a smartphone.

Regarding the creation of this new watch and the related project, Edouard Meylan, the CEO of the brand, said:

“We find ourselves at the dawn of a new technological era. This is precisely why we felt it was essential to humbly look out into this universe and be an integral part in defining the rules of this still unfamiliar world and asking the right questions. The entrepreneurial side is in our DNA and we are committed to cultivating this philosophy by taking risks and exploring new territories.”

For those of you who have been following us for some time you will now have understood my weakness for independent watchmakers. Among them, Moser is certainly one of the first that led me to approach this world, in some ways parallel to traditional watchmaking.

What I have always liked about Moser is the fact that it has always been able to create watches that are never banal and, above all, always innovative in many technical and constructive aspects but remaining anchored in traditionality.

I must admit, however, that my first impression about the new Genesis, was not entirely convincing. I told myself to wait a few days before writing about this new watch because most of the time I need some time to metabolize drastically new watches.

For goodness’ sake, my being very critical brings me at times even to a completely negative judgment. However, this is not the case. In fact, I must say that the more I look at the new Centre Seconds Genesis, the more I am convinced that it was a brilliant and completely resurrected stunt on the part of the Maison.

This is something that goes beyond a simple watch. It is kind of an access key to a parallel universe. And this is precisely the idea that prompted Moser to create the new Genesis: a watch with a physical, a digital and a virtual dimension altogether inside it.

What I have come to appreciate the most about this watch is its being a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: a front end equipped with an access code to the metaverse and, a caseback displaying in full respect of tradition all the beauty of a mechanical movement.

On the front of the watch, in fact, the first element that stands out is definitely the QR code engraved on the sapphire crystal placed to protect the beautiful Vantablack dial.

It is through this code that once framed with a smartphone, the watch owner will be able to access various dedicated services: from blockchain authentication and digital assets to the Metaverse.

Recalling the pixelated effect typical of the QR code, we find the titanium bezel that creates a whole with the QR code on the glass. Looking at the winding crown present at 3 o’clock on the microblasted steel case, we can see that, like the bezel, it is 3D printed and has the same pixelated effect.

Turning the watch upside down, we find the traditional haute horlogerie part par excellence: the movement. Through the sapphire crystal caseback located in the back of the 11.3 mm thick case, we can admire the automatic caliber HMC 200.

This movement contains all the traditional elements of the world of watchmaking finished with the care that distinguishes Moser’s calibers. In addition to being a watch that will certainly not go unnoticed by those around you, this new Genesis turns out to be an extremely comfortable and versatile timepiece thanks to its 40 mm diameter and hand-stitched gray kudu leather strap.

How does the Moser Genesis work?

In addition to buying a “normal” watch that can tell us the time, if we can call this futuristic timepiece that way, the watch comes with many functions and services that can be used through the QR code placed on the glass.

Through a dedicated app that can be downloaded to the smartphone, it will be possible to access, after framing the QR code of one’s watch with the camera, a complete ecosystem that will enable the authentication of watches through blockchain technology.

Customers will also have access to full watch lifecycle traceability and transparency, certification, warranty, insurance and other additional dedicated services including exclusive invitations to future launch events and priority for the purchase of future limited editions.

Digital Artwork by Moser

In addition to these services, whose development was made possible thanks to prestigious partners, non-speculative digital assets have also been created in the form of NFTs, including digital works of art. These are short “time capsule” videos that can be accessed by the owner that promote the watch and the watchmakers who created it, sealed forever on the blockchain the moment each watch is produced.

Last but not least, will be the ability to access, again through the QR code and dedicated app, an immersive experience in the Metaverse that invites customers to enter a new Moser universe.

Within this futuristic world space dedicated to Moser, owners of the new Endeavour Centre Seconds Genesis will be able to discover the history of the brand and the Manufacture, and even meet the Moser team inside a modern, minimalist Swiss chalet.

Price and availability

Limited to 50 pieces worldwide, this new Endeavour Centre Seconds Genesis represents the first watch of 3 connected with the Metaverse to be made by the Maison. The list price to secure the new Genesis on your wrist along with the chance to access the world of the future is CHF 27,000, corresponding to approximately EUR 27,000.
