2022 is only four days old and Omega immediately presents itself to the public with an incredible new watch. We are talking, as you will have already understood from the title, of a new Omega Speedmaster.
For fans of the brand this choice may be almost obvious!
2022 marks 65 years since the line was introduced back in 1957, and what better way to celebrate such an important milestone than to introduce a new Speedmaster with some of the collection’s most iconic features?
The Omega Speedmaster 65th anniversary
The model was inspired by the Speedmaster CK2915-1, the first in history to be produced.
It features a 38.6 mm case in 18K Canopus Gold, a special white gold alloy developed by Omega.
On the onyx dial we find a vintage-style Omega logo and the traditional writing with an oval “O”, typical of the first CK2915-1 models. Also in the dial, we have PVD-coated Canopus Gold indexes and 18-karat white gold hands.
Masterful work was also done on the bezel with “Grande Feu” enamel. Here we also find two peculiarities present in the first Speedmasters: the Dot Over 90 (DON), that is a dot present on the tachymeter scale above the “90”, and a diagonal dot at 70.
Another peculiarity we want to mention is the NAIAD symbol on the crown, another reference to the first Speedmaster models.
Finally, like the case, the bracelet is also in Canopus Gold and is enriched by an adjustment system to be able to widen or tighten it quickly.
The caliber 321
Now we come to what is perhaps the most important and most sought-after element of the whole watch, its caliber 321.
It is in fact the same, identical caliber that powered the first Speedmasters and that was used for the Apollo missions and moon landings. In our opinion, a wonderful way to carry with you a strong and fundamental link with tradition.
By turning the watch, the view of the movement from the sapphire crystal case back is jaw-dropping and is further enriched by the engraving of the seahorse to which a sapphire has been applied in place of the eye, in honor of the 65th anniversary.
Final remarks
With this model, Omega demonstrates its strong focus on heritage and at the same time its desire to innovate.
In fact, the choice of Canopus Gold instead of steel is not accidental. If on the one hand this new release is intended to be a hymn to tradition, on the other hand it aims to position itself on a completely different level.
It is not a celebration that fits into the same context as its predecessors, but illuminates them from afar and with respect.
The list price of € 81,300.00 can only be a confirmation of this and, although it may seem high, it is absolutely justified by the wealth of preciousness and details.
