Welcoming the watch that screams “Rock ‘N’ Roll”, a watch that will be talked about for a long time… here is the new Richard Mille RM 66 Manual Winding Flying Tourbillon. If the Smiley model was the best way to start the day, the 66 is the perfect way to express your soul.
The meaning of the horns
We Italians know this better than anyone else. Hand gestures are one of the most powerful and ancient languages ever, full of common symbols, different from every culture but which often uniquely unite the meaning in a message. You can just use your own hands to say words or even whole sentences.
The gesture of the horns, where the index and little finger are raised, while the thumb stops the other two fingers, has a very strong identity in the world of music. In the world of rock or punk, this gesture is used as a sign of rebellion, but in other contexts it can be a good omen.
Just think once again of our culture, where we often say “facciamo le corna”, when we hope that something will happen. A: “Let’s hope they deliver the watch you ordered eh…” B: “faccio le corna, the Boutique told me that it will arrive next week.”
Freedom proclaimed by the new Richard Mille RM 66
Now returning to the watch, here we are talking about real statement pieces in every sense. Just look at each watch of the brand to understand that they do what they want, they are free spirits who do not follow the rules of watchmaking. We know well the niche where RM plays, but being able to maintain the appeal they have is not a trivial matter.
We have certainly noticed an important trend for RM in the last two years. The dedication of the brand no longer concerns “conventional” watches, only time or with basic characteristics. They are working particularly on artistic and engineering works, which mix savoir-faire with performance.
Just think of Pharrell’s Richard Mille or the Smiley we were talking about at the beginning, not to mention the RM UP-01 which plays in a category of its own. They are all €1m+ pieces, limited to around 50 units each, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Richard Mille in the top 10 brands by turnover in Morgan Stanley’s 2023 report.
A case that hides the essence of rock or classic watchmaking?
Imagine a watch like the RM 66 and you’re sure to find anything but something related to traditional watchmaking. Well maybe that’s not the case.
On the sides of the case of the new Richard Mille RM 66 we find inserts in 5N red gold that can recall studs, as much as the Clou De Paris finish present on the bezels of watches in the 50s-60s. Probably more the former than the latter, but we like to imagine that there is something classic even in such an unconventional watch.
The hand that squeezes the fingers forming the horns is truly amazing. Crafted in 5N red gold, it grips the plate of the Richard Mille caliber RM 66, made of grade 5 titanium, in every sense. These details drive us crazy, there’s no need to add it.
At 12 o’clock, instead of at 6 o’clock, we find a Flying Tourbillon with a skull and a variable inertia balance wheel, for maximum power reserve performance (72 hours).
Price and availability to the public
The new Richard Mille RM 66 Manual Winding Flying Tourbillon will have a retail price of X and will be limited to 50 pieces worldwide.
Once again the brand raises the bar for their watches, what will be their craziest creation in 2023? Will there be new aspects close to the RM UP-01?
