At Watches & Wonders 2024, three years after the birth of the Tonda PF collection, Parmigiani presents a new time-only version of the now iconic line. This latest watch answers a question that has become ingrained in the culture of collecting and is a particularly important topic for us at IWS. It all comes down to a single question: date or no date?
Parmigiani’s response
With the unveiling of the new Tonda PF no date, Parmigiani takes the concept of essentiality to the extreme, stripping the watch of all visible complications and eliminating even that one element, a small square or rectangular window, that turns the noses of the most purists and lovers of symmetry.
The absence of the date is not the only new feature of the new Tonda PF Golden Siena. The watch is presented with a brand new dial color, Golden Siena. A kind of yellow ochre tending to gold that is very warm and enveloping. The dial’s decorative motif is classic hand guillochage featuring the now iconic grain d’orge finish, literally “barley grain.” The dial is then complemented by hand-applied rhodium-plated hour markers and the classic 18ct white gold skeletonized “delta” hands, also rhodium-plated.
The stainless steel case with 950 platinum knurled bezel has not been altered and retains its dimensions of 40 mm diameter and 7.8 mm thickness, with a water resistance rating of 100 m.
The Caliber
Turning the watch, from the sapphire crystal aperture, one can admire the caliber PF703, the same as the versions that preceded the Golden Siena. The beauty of this mechanism is accentuated by the absence of a bulky oscillating weight, replaced instead by a more elegant micro-rotor that also allows one to admire the other components of the watch as well as the Côtes de Genève and Perláge finishes on the plate and the 29 rubies.
Conclusioni
Parmigiani continues to excellently continue the direction it has charted in its rebirth from 2021 to the present. The no-date iteration, while it may seem like a minor update to some, for purists like me is a no small addition to the model’s offerings and will certainly be very well perceived by the collector community. Personally, I also think the dial color is extremely well done, which with these warm tones, thanks in part to the comfortable integrated bracelet, seems to wrap around the wrist to perfection.
