The maison revealed the new Blast Free Wheel Marquetry, a watch that honors the history of Ulysse Nardin, a pioneer in the use of silicon as a reference material. A New Perspective on the Art of Watchmaking.
Ulysse Nardin has decided to break the traditional watchmaking mold by introducing the Blast Free Wheel Marquetry, a tribute to the iconic Freak movement of 2001. The watch is an ode to technological innovation and art, incorporating silicon not only as a mere mechanical component but also as an artistic medium. In fact, the material was also used to decorate the dial.
Technology and design
At the heart of the new Ulysse Nardin Blast Free Wheel Marquetry beats the Manufacture caliber UN-176, a movement that defies both the law of gravity and traditional watchmaking boundaries. This unique movement, completely developed in-house by the Manufacture, took two years of effort and research. The star of the watch is the flying tourbillon positioned at 6 o’clock, composed of 45 components and equipped with a revolutionary constant escapement, the Ulysse Anchor Constant Escapement.
This defies convention, with a circular design that holds the anchor suspended in the center, supported by blade springs four want less than a hair thick, for smooth balance action. This avant-garde technology eliminates the need for numerous components, once again demonstrating Ulysse Nardin’s boldness in watchmaking innovation.
The Blast Free Wheel Marquetry gives a fascinating view of its movement in action. The flying tourbillon, anchor and wheels seem to dance on the silicon dial in an intricate interplay of flying mechanisms that winks at a dynamic already seen but interpreted in an original way. The energy provided by the flying barrel at 12 o’clock ensures an extraordinary seven-day power reserve, as shown by the power reserve indicator at 4 o’clock.
The whole is enclosed within a 45 mm diameter white gold case with negative-angle facets obtained by a laser method. This case not only expresses refined aesthetics, but also offers a side view of the movement, thanks to the “ultra-glass box” that houses the geometric lines of the mosaic pattern. Thanks to this expedient, in fact, it is possible to observe the movement even through the sides of the case. The only flaw is the thickness, too big for wrists as small as mine….
The silicon dial
In a never-before-seen innovation, the dial of this watch is decorated with a blue inlay composed of 103 silicon fragments. These fragments are meticulously assembled by artisans, creating a three-dimensional effect and catching the eye with shifting reflections. The case back is no different: it features a blue silicon plaque, demonstrating the attention to detail and love for the material that defines Ulysse Nardin’s identity.
