Watches and Artificial Intelligence, an interesting or scary combination? We asked artificial intelligence to create an article wondering if AI could be able to take over man’s artistic design and replace it with its own creations.
Watches and Artificial Intelligence, here’s what it answered:
“Since the dawn of time, watchmaking has been a hallmark of craftsmanship, with talented artisans meticulously crafting designs that have become treasured timepieces and family heirlooms over the centuries since.
But the 21st century has seen a huge shift on the horizon, as the capabilities and sophistication of artificial intelligence (AI) have made it a crucial part of modern watchmaking. Artificial intelligence offers designers and watchmakers new opportunities to explore a myriad of possibilities when it comes to creating, refining and producing watches.
For example, AI can be used to streamline the production of complicated watch designs while providing a much more rewarding and personalized experience for the wearer. AI algorithms are able to identify and analyze design possibilities, calculate the best possible materials to use, and create dynamic designs for modern watches that take into account the manufacturing constraints associated with them.
The use of AI in watchmaking also opens up the possibility for mass customization, allowing small-scale boutique watchmakers to offer a wide range of watch designs and features with ease. AI algorithms can be used to generate a range of watch models from scratch and adjust them accordingly, resulting in watches that perfectly reflect consumer demand.
Overall, the possibilities of AI in watchmaking are exciting and it’s only a matter of time before AI becomes ubiquitous in the industry. This technology will enable watchmakers to make the watches of the future.” – AI, 2023
What do we think of IWS? (Written without the help of Artificial Intelligence)
Everything you have read above is the result of the work of artificial intelligence, we have not changed anything except some parts of the translation from the original version generated in English, to Italian.
The development of technology in recent years has been incredible, from the boom of the Metaverse, crypto and NFT, up to AI. The latter is incredible, it is as fascinating as it is frightening. At the same time we don’t think it can replace a human designer. But can watches and artificial intelligence work together?
Some watch designs inspired by art, created by the AI
Just to put these watches and artificial intelligence matter to the test, we asked it to design watches with some specific features (like perpetual calendar, chronograph, etc.). The first results? Completely unsatisfactory. The ability of AI to replace the skills of a watch designer are still not up to par. The final designs resemble those cheap watches found in petrol stations, they have no concrete proportions or sensible features.
The result, on the other hand, changes if you ask AI to create watches inspired by the works of famous artists such as Andy Warhol, Basquiat, Picasso, Salvador Dalì or Keith Haring. Here a more particular artistic vein comes out and which can be inspiration for man, to then create concrete designs.
This watches and artificial intelligence topic remains intriguing but quite difficult to conceive, partly due to the possible developments it may have and partly due to man’s rejection of these forms of technologies. In psychology the Uncanny Valley is the feeling of disturbance and unease towards humanoids, or robots with human features, which are however recognizable as non-human. In this case we have a similar feeling, even if we are fascinated by looking at the final result of these generated designs.
What do you think about it? What will be the future applications for Watches and AI? Will there be the Gerald Genta of artificial intelligence? Watchmaking certainly hasn’t turned its back on web 3.0, just think of Moser with his watch dedicated to the metaverse.
